As Summer winds down, my heart breaks a little. Summer has always been my favorite. The best way to heal the blues? Go out with a bang and head to the land of Aloha!
Every time I’ve gone to Hawaii I think, “are you KIDDING me with this place?!” From the first time my five year old self stepped off the airplane there and was given a fresh flower plumeria lei, I have been in love. It seems like a modern Eden to me. It’s got crystal clear sea, pristine reefs, emerald green mountains, exotic flowers everywhere, perfect weather… I mean, it’s the birthplace of ukuleles and surfing! It’s one of those places where God’s creativity knocks me out. It makes me emotional to just look around and see what sort of wonders he is capable of. And boy oh boy, does it make me want to paint!
I got to unexpectedly travel to Hawaii this past week. One of the benefits of living in California is that Hawaii is just a hop over the pond, and in the off season, tickets are affordable. My parents invited me to come spend some time with them before my next semester at CalArts, so of course I jumped at the opportunity.
Of course we did all the fun Hawaii things (snorkeling, drinking fruity things seaside, sunbathing, etc.) but the best part was getting to have a little quality time with my parents. I am the third of four children in my family. While I love each one of my siblings dearly (for real, love yall mean it), getting some one on one time was a real treat. My parents are actually the best, and they teach me so much even when they don’t know it. My dad is the adventurous one. He is always on the move, makes everyone laugh, works hard, and is up for a good time. My mom is the grace- filled one. She loves people better than anyone I know, is always accepting, gives freely, and is up for a deep conversation. I so deeply admire both parents’ deep wisdom and admirable commitment (this week also marked their 30th wedding anniversary!). Between getting a good helping of their love and of Hawaii, the week left me feeling rested and built up.
In my online shop, I have two paintings, “Sublime Shoreline and “Sight Set” that were painted with inspiration from some of my favorite places from past trips to Hawaii. They’ve been some of my favorites for awhile because of the dramatic color and thick oil painting style I used on them… and of course because they capture one of my very favorite places. I will be working on a few more pieces in the coming weeks for all you Hawaii lovers like me out there.
